THE MOVEMENTS
|
G.I. Gurdjieff (1866?-1949) dedicated his life to the pursuit and teaching of an ancient knowledge about Man and the Universe, the work of self observation and self studing.
Gurdjieff's Movements (called also Dances) is the name given to the collective body of dances that were collected or authored by him and taught to his students as part of his teaching. There were literally thousands of movements originally collected by Gurdjieff throughout his teaching life, although only a few hundreds are known today.
The Movements are based upon traditional dances that Gurdjieff was taught as he traveled throughout Central Asia and Africa where he encountered, observed and participated in, various Sufi Orders, Buddhist centers, Dervishes, ancient hidden monasteries and other sources of traditional culture and learning.
The music for the movements was written by Gurdjieff and Thomas de Hartmann, a composer that was one of his students. Within the musical formats were systematically represented some of the cosmic laws taught by him. Gurdjieff taught that the movements were not merely exercises in concentration and displays of bodily coordination: on the contrary, in the movements was embedded real, concrete knowledge, passed for generations - representing in each posture some cosmic truth that the informed observer could read like a book.
